NEC Develops Prototype HSDPA Mobile Handsets

Tokyo, February 1, 2006 — NEC Corporation (NEC) today announced that it has jointly developed prototypes of new HSDPA(*) mobile handsets with NTT DoCoMo, in the run up to the launch of NTT DoCoMo’s HSDPA services, scheduled for the second quarter of FY2006.

HSDPA, a high-speed packet transmission technology standardized by the Third Generation Partnership Project, offers a maximum downlink speed of 14Mbps in theory.

The new prototype realizes a maximum data download speed of 3.6Mbps, a rate almost 10 times faster than that of present 3G FOMAR terminals. This enables the download of large volumes of data and the browsing of rich contents, and is expected to realize a whole new and advanced range of uses in the future.

NEC, as a total solution provider of 3G, has not only succeeded in the
development of prototypes of HSDPA handsets but also in the practical
implementation of HSDPA-based 3G infrastructures (node-Bs, radio network controllers). It will gradually carry out HSDPA trials on commercial 3G networks with the cooperation of Asian and European mobile operators.　

The new working prototype will be displayed at the booths of both NTT DoCoMo and NEC at 3GSM World Congress 2006, being held from February13 to 16, 2006.

NEC will also exhibit its latest mobile solutions this year, showcasing the products behind its leading position in the global 3G and mobile internet market. At this year’s 3GSM World Congress, NEC will unveil a selection of integrated products and services that show how NEC is adding value today to its customers by providing end-to-end solutions. handsets and semiconductor solutions.
